It’s 5:00 AM on a Tuesday morning and my kids are all up in front of the TV with their PJ’s on inside out. Each of this saying a silent prayer that just because there is a slight chance of snow the schools will be closed. I on the other hand, am extra careful to make sure that even my socks are on the right way with not so much as a seem out of place as I pray for the exact opposite of what they want! So, today I guess we both won… they went to school but got sent home. Now what? There I was in the house with screaming excited kids that have gotten a snow day. Oh no… not just my kids but all of the kids in the neighborhood who happen to know I do daycare so I would be at home. Lucky me!! I knew I had to think fast to find something to keep them busy.
My first trip was to the closet to dig out all of the sand and beach toys. They are kids and the freezing cold means NOTHING to them. Well, as long as they don’t have to stand at the bus stop! I bundled them up and sent them out into the snow to have a snow castle contest! They had a blast and stayed out of my hair for a while!
When that was finished I grabbed a few old spray bottles and filled them up with water and a couple of drops of food coloring! Waaaalaaaa, back out they went to “paint” their castles! Whew… that killed another 45 minutes!
So now I have little red noses and wet droopy pants standing at my door BEGGING to come in. Alright… I suppose I have to. I brought them all in and made them change. Once they were all dried up it was time for the inside fun. Keep in mind, I have babies here all day as well so this was going to have to be quiet time for them so that the babies could rest.
Thank God for hot chocolate and microwaves. They each made a nice warn mug of Hot Cocoa with marshmallows. I told them all to take a minute to look at their marshmallows and see if they could “see” anything in them. Then ask the other kids to see if they saw the same thing. The things they made out of those little marshmallows were hilarious. I think one even saw a giraffe… don’t ask!
I was actually making progress and thought the day was moving right along slowly when I heard those words. The words every parent dreads… “ We’re boohooed”.
Uhhh okay , I thought. I can do this, I know I can. “Lets play a game” I said. Of course I got the usual… games are boring speech. NOT this game! HA, are going to play…WHAT is in my box! Each kid gets an imaginary box. They put something in the box. Then in a nice little circle they go around and ask a yes or no question. Something like 21 questions but no boundaries. Oh the things they had in those boxes. I think the winner was my daughters friend Lexi… she had a “cutie” in her box!
We played games like that for the rest of the day until the time FINALLY came for everyone to go home. How I am writing this article without falling asleep is still a mystery to me and guess what I just heard? MORE snow and freezing rain is expected tonight. UGH, please say a prayer for me J
